The project speculates about a public bathhouse for a possible / nearby (dystopian) future, developed around the two UN Goals – Climate Action & Good Health and Well-Being.

The proposal is called “protective skins” and it is about a divided (but related) architecture:

a private suit and a public bathhouse – both protecting the human body from different kinds of pollutants (airborne pollution, missing ozone layer, nuclear radiation (wind), acid rain).

The proposal is tested in a counterfactual time line on the Japanese island of Hashima – but represents a general proposal.

The building functions as a cleaning machine: cleaning suit, human body, environment, and itself.

Analytic computational bottom-up methods were developed around the human body (informing suit and architectural program) and transferred and adapted to the scale of the building: blending the skins of protection and making the building conceptually to the body (with its organs, structure, skin, and metabolism).

The proposal wants to question architect’s romanticized image of nature and the idea of protection solely as a binary on/off condition, as a possible way to rethink our architectural boundaries in general.

Additionally, it asks for a critical incorporation of pollution in design – away from pollution as an image and away from seeing pollution as something remote (in terms of time and space).

Ayahuasca is a brew made out of Banisteriopsis Caapi Vine and the Psychotria Viridis Leaf. The brew is used as a traditional spiritual medicine in ceremonies among the people of Amazonian Peru. Part of the spiritual ceremony is: the collecting of the plants, preparation of the drug and the collective ceremonial drinking of the brew – usually three to five days in a row. Elements during the ceremonies are: singing, screaming, purging, visuals and trance.
The architectural proposal tries to use natural forces, such as wind, rain and light to enhance the spiritual experience. The proposal offers an alternative ceremonial space for foreigners and locals.
The architectural structure contains: the main ceremony room in the middle, a ceremony bathroom, a drug preparation area, a sleeping area, a cooking area and a recreation room. The non-ceremonial bathroom is located in a separate structure.
The main metal structure was designed by using an agent based growing algorithm. The structure is an exoskeleton for the tent-like latex skins and for the latex-bag rod-system which actuates the ceremony-tent during raining periods.
The latex skins are separated in different elements with different purposes. Such as: breathing nozzles, containers for moos-growth and openings for light.
The video will show an abstraction of one ceremony.

3d cellular automata (list- and layer-based) creates three voids around a tree point cloud scan. 200 pixel x 200 pixel * 200 slides (eight times, from bottom two top). CA starts from tree bark, green is more likely to win in y-direction (minus), green int x-direction (minus) and blue in z-direction (minus).  White wins with specific distance to bark.

The beam-growing algorithm finds a solution for contrasting objectives. It constantly calculates new growing directions based on closest neighbors, closest targets (design intention), border / branching distance, gravity and neighbor structures / trying to connect in the direction of beam orientations. The algorithm connects all desired goals and still is able to react to design intentions by using implemented weights.


Space Fight


Each pixel and its eight neighbors are randomly checked for their color values. If the checked pixel is not white, look for the majority of colors around the pixel and color it in the same way.  If the checked pixel is white and at least one neighbor is colored then color it randomly.  It is possible to interactively set colored dots on the screen or scatter some colored pixels over the entire canvas. Sorry, it is a little bit sluggish at the moment. Made with processing. Will maybe become some kind of plant growth simulator / speculator or pattern generator.
